H.E. AMBASSADOR GAMAL MOHAMED HASSAN

Minister of Commerce and Industry, Federal Government of Somalia

H.E. Ambassador Gamal Mohamed Hassan is the Minister of Commerce and Industry of the Federal Government of Somalia, appointed on 14 December 2025. He leads the development and implementation of national trade and industrial policies, focusing on strengthening the private sector, promoting domestic production, attracting investment, and expanding Somalia’s access to regional and international markets.

Ambassador Gamal previously served as Somalia’s Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development from 2017 to 2022, where he contributed to national development planning, economic policy formulation, and investment promotion. His public service also includes membership in the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia and service as Somalia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Kenya, where he advanced the country’s diplomatic relations and represented Somalia in regional and international engagements, including before key United Nations institutions.

His wider professional experience includes serving as Director of the IGAD Centre of Excellence for Climate Adaptation and Environmental Protection, Senior Political Adviser at the Office of the United States Special Representative for Somalia, and undertaking professional engagements with institutions in Canada, including Carleton University.

Ambassador Gamal holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Carleton University, Canada, and a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and Foreign Policy from Moi University, Kenya. He has also undertaken postgraduate studies in Global Energy and Climate Policy at SOAS University of London and pursued doctoral research in Environmental Economics and Environmental Management at the University of York.

As Minister of Commerce and Industry, Ambassador Gamal is focused on advancing Somalia’s trade and industrial development, improving the business environment, supporting Somali entrepreneurs, strengthening economic partnerships, and promoting investment and value addition. His priorities include enabling Somali businesses to compete in regional and international markets and expanding opportunities for sustainable economic growth, employment, and national prosperity.
